SCC North action: Buzzer-beater by Rio Hondo runs Mt. SAC Men's Basketball losing streak to five

(Walnut, CA) Up 78-72 with 1:50 to play, it looked as if host Mt. San Antonio College (9-13, 0-3) might end its four-game losing streak, but Rio Hondo College (5-16, 1-1) closed the game on a 6-0 run to claim an 80-78 South Coast Conference North Division win on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The decisive score came on a buzzer-beating layup by the Roadrunners' Sharodd Lewis.

Nick Hopkins led the Mounties with 24 points as teammates Arturo Angeles and Micah Myricks added 18 and 13, respectively. LJ McClain grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as Hopkins pulled down seven.

Rio Hondo's Myles Jones led all players with 26 points.

The game included eight lead changes and five ties which saw Mt. SAC lead by as many as 12 points late in the first half. Despite losing, the Mountie outplayed the Roadrunners in several team categories, including rebounding (40-24), points in the paint (48-34), and bench scoring (23-14).

SCC North play continues at home for Mt. SAC on Friday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. against Los Angeles Trade Tech College (3-19, 0-2). The teams met in the College of the Canyons Tournament on Dec. 29, and the Mounties prevailed, 65-48.
