Mt. SAC Men’s Basketball Gives State No. 3 ELAC a Scare, but Fall 90-80

(Walnut, CA) With the Mt. SAC Men's Basketball Team trailing by only a basket with seven minutes left in the game, visiting East Los Angeles College went on a 10-1 run to virtually put the game away and win, 90-80, in a South Coast Conference North game Friday (Jan. 31).

With the win, the CCCAA State No. 3 Huskies, extended their team-record winning streak to 18 games, improving to 22-1 overall and remain in first in conference with a 3-0 record.  

The Mounties dropped to 6-16 and 1-2.

Trailing by six points, 66-60, with 8:56 left, the Mounties came the closest to the Huskies since the first five minutes of the game with a basket by Maliq Neurell and two free throws by Agustin Fernandez to trail, 66-64.

The ensuing 10-1 ELAC run extended its lead to 11 points, 76-65.

The Huskies were led by a game-high 33 points from Kealen Allen.

Mt. SAC had four players in double figures, with freshman guard Kalique Mitchell (8-12 FGM, 2-4 3PM, 4-6 FTM, 6 RB) leading the way with 22 points.

Freshman guard Collin Reed (2-5 3PM, 4-6 FTM) had 14 points, followed by freshman guard Josh Jastrab (3-11 3PM, 4-4 FTM), 13 points and Neurell (3-7 FGM, 2-3 3PM, 2-2 FTM, 2 RB, 5 Assts.), 10 points.

The Mounties, who travel to Pasadena City College Wednesday (Feb. 5), were a near-perfect 19-23 (82.6 %) from the charity stripe.
