(Walnut, CA) Mt. SAC Football begins the 2018 Season, this Saturday (September 1st), against Bakersfieild College. Game time is 6:00 pm at Covina District Field. The Renegades, a traditional powerhouse, finished last season with a 7-4 record. Head Coach Bob Jastrab is 7-1 against Bakersfield since taking over the Mountie Program 14 years ago.
Mt. SAC is currently ranked 9th in the College Football Association preseason national rankings and 10th in the California Community College Football Coaches Poll.
For the third year in a row they will call District Field in Covina home, while a new stadium continues to be constructed on the campus. It is scheduled to open near the end of 2019.
Mt. SAC will remain in the National Conference Central Division, but four new teams are on the five-team schedule.
For the first time in four years, the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) has made major changes in the Southern California Football Association Conferences.
Out are Riverside, Long Beach, Chaffey and L.A. Harbor colleges. In are Fullerton, Palomar, Cerritos and San Diego Mesa. El Camino is the only other team to remain in the conference with the Mounties.
The four other nonconference games on the schedule are Long Beach City, Chaffey, East Los Angeles and Saddleback.
"We have a very challenging conference this year," said Mt. SAC coach Bob Jastrab, who enters his 14th season with an overall record of 128-29 (.815 winning percentage). "It is a tough schedule."
Mt. SAC, which has won four state and three national championships, captured a share of the conference championship in a three-way tie last sesason, but missed the four-team state playoffs.
Jastrab once again has put together another in a long line of solid teams.
"We have a very strong group of receivers, the best in a while," Jastrab said.
One of them is sophomore tight end Austin Griffin, who is an early commit to Louisville.
"We are more of a veteran team on offense and very young on defense," Jastrab added.
"We're going to have to bring out our best this year."
One of the tougher games is the final regular season contest against 2016 and 2017 CCCAA State Champion Fullerton College.
Mt. SAC had 29 players from last season offered scholarships at the next level, including late signees Lamar Dawson and Bernard Shermer.
