Mt. SAC Baseball Advances to Third Round of CCCAA Playoffs

Mt. SAC Baseball Team after sweep of Riverside in best-of-three series
Mounties sweep the best-of-three series and advance to the CCCAA Sectional.

(Riverside, CA) Four-runs in the second and eighth innings, sparked eighth-seed Mt. SAC (26-18) to a 12-8 win on Friday, over third-seed Riverside City (32-12).  With the victory in game 2 of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCCAA) Super Regional, the Mounties swept the best-of-three series and advance to the CCCAA Sectional where they will travel to take on #1 Orange Coast College.

Leading, 2-1, in the bottom of the second, Mt. SAC's Omar Veloz (4-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) doubled to center and then scored on a single by Caleb Ellis (2-for-6, RBI, 2 R) to put the Mounties up, 3-1. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Ellis scored on a passed ball, then Alex Gonzalez and Michael Sandoval scored on a single by Albert Luevano (1-for-4, 3 RBI) to give Mt. SAC a, 6-1, lead.

The Tigers scored a run in the third and fourth, to close the gap to 6-3, before the Mounties punched across a pair of runs in the fifth to take an, 8-3, lead. Riverside rallied in the sixth and seventh and knotted the score, 8-8, through seven.

A passed ball, throwing error, and wild pitch by Riverside in the bottom of the eighth, led to four Mt. SAC runs that proved to be enough for the win.

Reliever Steven Ordorica (8-1) got the win for Mt. SAC, throwing three innings and striking out two, while allowing no runs. Starter Christian Longoria gave up three runs in 4.1 innings.

Other top Mountie offensive performances included Derek Zavala (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R, 2B, 3B) and Kyle Koontz (1-for-2, RBI, 2 R, 3B).

Mt. SAC is 1-1 this season against Orange Coast College (33-8-1).

The Mounties will open up on Friday (05/17) at 2:00 pm against the Pirates.  The second game will be on Saturday (05/18) at 1:00 pm and the if needed game will be on Sunday (05/19) at noon.

This is the second consecutive season that Mt. SAC has advanced to the third round of the CCCAA playoffs.
