(Walnut and Torrance, CA) Mt. SAC (8-9, 2-0) opened its South Coast Conference schedule with a pair of wins over El Camino (12-3, 0-2) on Thursday and Friday.
Mt. SAC 3 El Camino 2 (Walnut, CA)
With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Alex Gonzalez drove Omar Veloz home for the winning run on a bases loaded single with one out.
Trailing 1-0 in the second, Mt. SAC knotted the score when Albert Luevano scored on a wild pitch. The Mounties scored again in the third on a Michael Sandoval single that scored Dylan Zavala.
El Camino responded with a run in the fifth to tie the score, 2-2, setting up the decisive ninth for Mt. SAC.
Luevano led the Mounties in hitting going 2-for-4.
Steven Ordorica (1-0) got the win for Mt. SAC. Starter Wyatt Regis threw four innings, striking out two. Matt Garcia pitched four strong innings of relief and finished with seven strikeouts.
Mt. SAC 5 El Camino 4 (Torrance, CA)
Tied 1-1 after two innings, Mt. SAC scored four in the top of the third behind a double by Dylan Zavala (3-for-5, RBI, R, 2B) and a three-run homer by Michael Sandoval (1-for-4, 3 RBI, R).
El Camino pulled to within one, 5-4, in the fifth, but Mt. SAC buckled down to hold on for the win.
Relief pitcher Tyler Hazlett (1-1) picked up the win for the Mounties, pitching two innings and striking out two. Steven Ordorica earned his second save of the season with 2.2 innings of relief. Starter Christian Longoria pitched 4.1 innings and struck out six.
Caleb Eills (3-for-5, R) and Derek Zavala (2-for-5, R, SB) also performed well offensively for Mt. SAC.
The Mounties will host Compton (3-13, 0-2) in an SCC matchup on Tuesday, March 5, at 2 p.m.
