(Walnut, CA) With four games left in the South Coast Conference regular season schedule, the Mt. SAC Baseball Team is moving closer to its first title in five years.

A 7-3 victory over visiting Rio Hondo on Thursday gives the Mounties a three-game lead with just over a week to go in the season. This would be the first SCC title since the 2013 season when the Mounties won back-to-back conference titles 2012-13.

Mt. SAC improves to 27-9 overall and 15-3 in conference. A big season-ending, three-game series with second-place East Los Angeles College looms next week.

Mt. SAC sophomore pitcher Mason Corneliussen (10-0) won his tenth game of the season as he pitched seven innings, allowing only a run and struck out two batters.

With no score through five innings, Mt. SAC scored three times to take a 3-0 lead.

Center fielder Quinn Cotter (1 for 3, R, RBI) doubled, scoring catcher Chris Sandberg for the 1-0 lead. Cotter then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Second baseman Elijah Zaragoza walked and Cotter came home after right fielder Elijah Greene (1 for 4, R) reached first on an error, sending Zaragoza (3 walks) and Greene to third and second base respectively.

The third run came across for the Mounties after Zaragoza scored on a passed ball.

Mt. SAC added a run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh for a 7-1 lead.

The three-run seventh was highlighted by a two-run double by shortstop Anthony Walters (1 for 3, R, 2 RBIs), scoring Greene and Zaragoza.

Mt. SAC completes the three-game series with Rio Hondo on Saturday at Rio Hondo, game time is noon.
