Avila Pitches Mounties to 7-1 Victory over Santa Ana College; Right Hander Fans Eight

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Baseball team broke a three-game losing streak which was highlighted by sophomore Josh Avila's fine performance on the mound Thursday at Mazmanian Field in a non-conference game.

The Mounties defeated Santa Ana, 7-1, and improved to 6-7 overall.

Avila, who improved to 3-1 on the season, went eight innings, scattered six hits, allowed a lone run and struck out eight Santa Ana batters. Avila, who leads the staff with 25.2 innings, lowered his ERA to 2.10.

Mt. SAC freshman second baseman Alex Gonzalez was 3 for 4 with a run scored and had three RBIs.

Freshman first baseman Jacob Castillo was 2-4, scored two runs and drove in a run.

The Mountie took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after freshman shortstop Ryon Knowles scored and freshman designated hitter Conner Shepherd came home on a single by Castillo.

After the Dons broke the shutout, (3-1), the Mounties scored three runs in the seventh and stretched the lead to 5-1.  The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Knowles, scoring Gonzalez and sophomore catcher Andrew Garcia.

The Mounties added two additional runs on the third single of the game by Gonzalez, scoring Castillo and Shepherd for the 7-1 final.

Mt. SAC will play at Fullerton College on Friday for a 2:00 pm game and return home next Tuesday against Irvine Valley College (6:00 pm).
