(Walnut) By John M. Sherrard – The Mt. SAC baseball team had its biggest day at the plate in the young season with a convincing 12-2 win over visiting Victor Valley College Thursday afternoon at Mazmanian Field. This win came after a tough 6-4 loss to San Jacinto College on Tuesday.
"The kids bounced back after a disappointing loss at San Jacinto," Mt. SAC head coach Kevin Smith said. "Our younger (players) on the mound pitched real well."
The Mounties started fast, scoring seven runs in the first two innings, which was highlighted by a two-run triple by sophomore designated hitter Kory Brown (Charter Oak HS).
Sophomore catcher Spencer Sundahl (East Lake HS, Chula Vista) led the offense with three hits, including two doubles and two stolen bases. Third baseman Matt Majher (Corona HS) also connected with three hits for the Mountie. The sophomore also had three RBIs and a stolen base. Freshman left fielder Jimmy Frazier (West Covina) collected two hits, including a triple a two runs scored.
Five Mt. SAC pitchers combined for a four-hitter in nine innings, with freshman John Carlile (Foothill HS) picking up his first college victory. The 6-5 right hander gave up only three hits in his five innings of work. Freshman Anthony Deeter (Sierra Vista HS), sophomore Jonathan Lopez (Santiago HS), freshman Blake Willoughby (Douglas County, Castle Rock, Colorado) and sophomore Alek Jimenez (Diamond Bar HS) all pitched one inning each without allowing a run, including perfect innings by Deeter and Lopez.
The Mounties improved to 2-1 in the first week of the season and will conclude with a home game on Saturday at noon against Glendale College (1-0).
Mt. SAC sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, with the first four batters all scoring. It was almost duplicated in the second inning, with the first four batters reaching safely as the first three scored for the 7-0 lead.
The first three batters in the lineup, second baseman Dallas Reed (Vista Murrieta HS), freshman right fielder Antonio Muniz (South Hills HS) and Brown all scored twice in the first two innings. Muniz reached base three of four times, including two walks, a hit by pitch and had a sacrifice RBI.
