Mt. SAC Athletics Announces the Passing of Mountie Hall of Famer Bob McGuire

Mt. SAC Athletics announcement on the passing of Mountie Hall of Famer Bob McGuire.

(Walnut, CA) It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mountie Hall of Famer Bob McGuire (81) on Saturday, September 21st, 2019.  Bob was a deeply entrenched and beloved figure within Mt. San Antonio College and its athletic special events, since his days as a Mountie student-athlete.

He impacted thousands of individuals through his long time involvement with California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) as one of meet directors of the CIF Southern Section Cross Country, CIF Southern Section Track & Field and CIF State Track & Field Championships, an event in which he had been involved with since 1979.

“Bob was a very special person to everyone who knew him” replied Mt. SAC Director of Special Events, Doug Todd.  “His enthusiasm, insight and knowledge of track, cross country and Mt. SAC, along with his smile was extraordinary.  Bob’s legacy and impact will continue for generations to come.”

At Mt. SAC, Bob ran for legendary coach Hilmer Lodge as a member of the cross country and track & field programs.  An outstanding runner and team captain, he guided the Mounties to the 1957 track & field state championship, the college’s very first state championship. Bob continued his career and education at Stanford University where he competed for another coaching legend, Payton Jordan.

During his career in education, he served students at Neff and La Mirada High Schools as a teacher, coach and athletic director.  As a coach, he led Neff to the 1972 CIF Boy’s Track & Field C Division State Championship.

In retirement, Bob remained actively involved with the CIF as well as volunteering with the Mt. SAC Athletic Special Events (Mt. SAC Relays, Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational and Footlocker West Regional Cross Country Championships) and also as a high school track and field starter.  He also served as the historian of the Mt. SAC Cross Country and Track & Field Programs.

Last week, Bob was injured while trimming a tree at his sister’s house in Orland, California (32 miles west of Chico).  He sustained 2 fractures to his spine and was transported to San Francisco for surgery.  After returning to Chico for rehabilitation, Bob took a turn for the worse and passed away early Saturday.

Bob is survived by his sister Kathy Smart of Orland, California, sister Jan Vickers of Laguna Beach, brother-in-law Don Vickers, nephew Ian, his wife Annmarie and their son Cameron and nephew Raphael.

Services for Bob are pending and will be announced later on this site.
