2016-17 Mt. SAC Student-Athletes of the Year

(Walnut, CA) Taylor Jaurique of the Softball Team and Spencer Chlebowski of the Men’s Swimming Team were named 2017 Mt. SAC Spring Student-Athletes of the Year, while Haley English of the Women’s Volleyball Team and Edwyn Gutierrez of the Men’s Soccer Team were named 2016 Fall Student-Athletes of the Year.  Voted upon by the Mt. SAC Coaching Staff, these four individuals earned this prestigous honor by leading their respective teams to South Coast Conference (SCC) Championships.

Taylor Jaurique led the Mountie Softball Team to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships, where the Mounties took second.  Jaurique, a sophomore catcher out of Wilson High School (Hacienda Heights), maintains a 3.4 GPA in the classroom.  On the diamond, she knocked out 14 homeruns, batted .465 with 51 RBI’s.  Jaurique earned a number of post season honors including SCC Player of the Year, CCCAA State Tournament All-Tournament Team, CCCAA Diamond Catcher of the Year (best catcher in California), National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American and NFCA Academic All-American. 

Spencer Chlebowski was major factor in the Mt. SAC Men’s Swimming Program capturing their 4th consecutive  SCC Championship.  Chlebowski was named the SCC Swimmer of the Year, capturing SCC Titles in the 500 freestyle, 400 individual medley and 1,650 freestyle.  The sophomore out of Roosevelt (Eastvale) earned All-American Honors (top 16 in the country) in the 500 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 1,650 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay.

Outside Hitter Haley English led the Mounties Women’s Volleyball Team to the college’s first ever, SCC Championship (North Division), with a perfect 8-0 record.  On the year, English posted some impressive stats including 212 kills, 111 assists and .284 kill percentage.  The sophomore out of Chino High School, was named the SCC’s Most Valuable Player.

Goalie Edwyn Gutierrez’s performance in the goal, led the Mounties to their 5th CCCAA State Championship.  Guitierrez shutout the Mounties two state championship opponents and won the PK battle in both contests and was named State Championship MVP.  The freshman out of Connections Academy finished the season with a .62 goals against average and 83 saves.  He earned numerous post season accolades including All-SCC First Team, National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Junior College Division III All-America First Team and NSCAA Junior College Division III All-West Region Honors.
