Defense Shines in 10-2 South Coast Conference Women’s Water Polo Win over Rio Hondo

(Whittier, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team put up a defensive front Wednesday and defeated Rio Hondo College, 10-2, in a South Coast Conference game to remain undefeated at 4-0. With the win the Mounties upped their overall record to 7-4.

Sophomore 2-meter Kayla De Herrera led Mt. SAC with three goals, followed by two each from freshmen Miranda Silva and Erin DeAnda.

Leading, 2-0, DeAnda scored back-to-back goals in the second to give the Mounties a, 4-0, advantage before Rio Hondo could score a goal with 2:50 left in the half to trail, 4-1.

Freshman driver Kaitlin Howard added a goal for the, 5-1, halftime score.

De Herrera added the only goal of the third period to lead, 6-1, and sophomore goalie Shelby Garcia held the Roadrunners scoreless for the second period in the game.

Silva stretched the lead to, 8-1, in the fourth period on two consecutive breakaway goals to put the game out of reach.

De Herrera and sophomore attacker Ridlee Dunlap finished the scoring for the Mounties.

The Mounties continue conference action next Monday Oct. 2 at L.A. Trade Tech in a 3:00 pm game.
