Women Water Polo Hit the Road to Sacramento; Win Puts Team at 2-2

(Sacramento CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team traveled to Sacramento over the weekend and finished 1-2 in the annual River Rage Tournament at American River College.

Leading the way in scoring in the three games was sophomore 2-meter specialist Kayla De Herrera with seven goals.

The Mounties lost the first two games by the slimiest of margins, by one goal and came away with a victory in the get-away game on Saturday.

Mt. SAC fell in the first game on Friday to San Joaquin Delta, 9-8, and by the same score, 9-8, in overtime to Delta on Saturday. They picked up a win in the afternoon game on Saturday, 9-6, over host American River.

San Joaquin Delta 9, Mt. SAC 8

In the opening game for the Mounties, De Herrera led the way with four goals, two assists and two steals while sophomore attacker Ridlee Dunlap added two goals.

Freshman driver Miranda Silva had a goal and led the team with five steals.

Freshmen Erin DeAnda and Reannon Urias had three steals apiece for the Mounties. Sophomore goalie Shelby made 12 saves in the game.

San Joaquin Delta 9, Mt. SAC 8 OT

On Saturday morning the Mounties again played San Joaquin Delta and lost a second one-goal game but in overtime.

Sophomore defender Alexis Aguirre led Mt. SAC with three goals and had two steals. She got the Mounties started with two goals in the opening period.

DeHerrera and Silva (3 assists, 2 steals, 4 blks) added two goals each in the game.

Mt. SAC 9, American River 6

The Mounties picked up their second win of the season and first of the tournament with DeAnda leading the way with three goals, three assists and a steal. Silva added two goals, four assists and a steal and goalie Garcia won her second game of the season.

In the first half of the back and forth game, neither team led by more than two goals as DeAnda had two for the Mounties. Mt. SAC had a two-goal lead, 3-1, only to be tied by American River, 3-3, at the half.

Aguirre and Urias gave the Mounties a two-goal, 5-3, Iead in the third period that they wouldn't relinquish the remainder of the game.

After American River closed to within a goal, 5-4, late in the third, the Mounties scored four consecutive goals, led by a pair from Silva, in the final period for the, 9-4, advantage with 1:01 remaining in the game.

Mt. SAC will continue South Coast Conference action with a 3:00 pm game at home on Wednesday against El Camino College.
