Mountie Women Water Polo Sweep Their Way into SCC Title Game; Defeat PCC, 10-2, Cerritos, 8-5

By John M. Sherrard

(PASADENA) For the fourth year in a row the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team will play for the championship in the South Coast Conference Tournament.

After a sweep on the first day of the tournament the Mounties will try to regain the tournament title they won back in the 2013 season.

Mt. SAC, which finished second in the SCC this season, defeated host PCC, 10-2, and avenged a hard-fought conference loss to Cerritos last month and returned the favor and downed the Falcons, 8-5, in the semifinal game.

The Mounties will again face Long Beach City College for the conference tournament championship.

Mt. SAC lost to LBCC in last years' conference title game but came away with the conference championship in 2013, also against Long Beach.

In the morning game against PCC, the Mounties were led by a six-goal performance by freshman 2-meter player Kayla De Herrera and two goals each by sophomore attackers Beth Keane (4 steals) and Hannah Krolik.

The Mounties led, 5-1, at the half and duplicated it in the second half, while goalie Shelby Garcia shutout the Lancers in the first and fourth periods.

However, the game of the day for the Mounties was the downing of Cerritos, which won, 5-3, in a conference game in October.

After trailing, 1-0, on Friday to the Falcons, Krolik evened the score at 1-1 late in the opening period and Mt. SAC never trailed the rest of the way.

After De Herrera gave the Mounties a 4-3 lead with 3:28 left in the third period, they would double up on Cerritos, 4-2, for the 8-5 final. Krolik had three tallies in the decisive fourth period.

Mt. SAC will play the title game at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday and wait for Sunday's seedings for the So Cal's next week.
