Mountie Women Split Games on first Day of Ventura Tournament; Defeat American River, 18-16, lose to Ventura, 11-10

(VENTURA) After taking a break from South Coast Conference action the women headed north to the Ventura Tournament over the weekend.

On Friday the Mountie women split a pair of tight games, defeating American River College, 18-16, and losing a close, 11-10, game to host Ventura.

After the Friday games the Mounties upped their record to 11-5 overall.

The Mountie scoring duo of sophomore attacker Beth Keane (Corona HS) and freshman 2-meter player Kayla De Herrera (Bonita HS) led all scorers with eight and six goals respectively. Keane also had four assists and four steals.

With the game tied at 16-16 with 2:21 remaining in the game, Keane scored twice in the last two minutes to take the victory.

Keane gave Mt. SAC a 17-16 lead with an unassisted goal at 2:05 left in the game and sealed the deal with a goal, assisted from freshman 2-meter player Marina Valenzuela (Chino HS), with only :11 remaining.

Keane scored three goals in the first and fourth periods to lead the Mounties.

Only once did the Mounties lead by three goals with 11 ties in the game.

In the afternoon game Mt. SAC was in a second consecutive close game, losing 11-10, to the Pirates.

With the game tied, 10-10, Ventura player Lauren Wiksell scored the winning goal with 26 second remaining in the game.

The Mounties were down by a goal, 3-2, after the first period and 6-5 at the half.

With Ventura leading 8-6 heading into the final period, the Mounties tied the game at 10-10 only to lose in the last 30 seconds.
