Men/Women Water Polo Teams Easily Defeat Rio Hondo in SCC Games

(WALNUT) By John M. Sherrard – Both the Mt. San Antonio College men and women water polo teams defeated visiting Rio Hondo College in their second South Coast Conference game Tuesday afternoon at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics center.

The women downed the Roadrunners, 12-4, followed by the men scoring early and often for a 23-9 win.

Both teams are now 2-0 in conference, with the women having a 4-2 overall record, while the men remain undefeated at 6-0 overall.

The Mountie women were led by sophomore attacker Beth Keane (Corona HS) with a game-high four goals, while freshman 2 meter Marina Valenzuela (Chino HS) had three goals and freshman 2 meter Julia Pruitt (Ayala HS) added two.

Leading the men in the scoring column for the third time this season in six games was sophomore utility Scott McDill (Walnut HS, Air Force Academy) with a game-high five goals, while freshman attacker Vinnie Rivera (Chino Hills HS) and sophomore utility Jeffrey Silverberg (Walnut HS) each had four goals.

"I think we really have a good team this year," said Silverberg, who has 25 goals in six games. "We're starting off strong too, but still have a lot of stuff to work on and build on."  "I think the main thing that will help us win those hard games is us executing on other teams' mistakes."

In the men's game, the Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the first period but Mt. SAC scored four consecutive goals to end the period with the 4-1 lead.

Silverberg scored his third goal of the half in the second period, along with two goals each from sophomore utility Mike Meza (Chino HS), McDill and sophomore center Thomas Randles(Claremont HS).  Silverberg helped the Mounties hold the Roadrunners to 2 goals in the first half, in large part to his strong defensive play at the center position.

The biggest scoring output was yet to come as the Mounties poured in nine goals in the final period. McDill led the way for Mt. SAC with three tallies in the final period.

In the women's game in the second half the Mounties were led by Valenzuela's and Pruitts two goals each.

On defense Keane led the team with five steals along with sophomore Hannah Krolik's with four.

The Mountie men will host the 43rd Annual Mt. SAC Water Polo Invitational Friday and Saturday. Fourteen colleges will be represented.  "This is always a strong tournament and we always look forward to great games throughout the weekend.  We will play 3 perennial top 10 So Cal teams and 1 top 3 Nor Cal team, so we will be tested for sure."  Mt. SAC coach Marc Ruh said.

Mt. SAC's women will return to conference action next week against East Los Angeles College at 3:00 on Wednesday and then will host the 20th Annual Classic on Friday and Saturday September 23rd and 24th.
