Mt. SAC Women Water Polo Drop First Two Games In American River College Tourney

(SACRAMENTO) By John M. Sherrard – The Mt. San Antonio College women's water polo team hit the road for a four-game trip in the American River Tournament in Sacramento Thursday, but came away empty on the first day with two losses.

In the first game the Mounties dropped a 9-3 decision to San Joaquin Delta College, followed by a 10-5 setback to host American River College.

In the first game against San Joaquin Delta, the Mounties trailed 2-1 at the half, but the Mustangs outscored the Mounties in the second half, 7-2, for the victory.

Mt. SAC (1-1) freshman 2-meter specialist Kayla De Herrera (Bonita HS) gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead in the first period, but that would be their only lead.

After a defensive first half with San Joaquin holding a slim, 2-1 lead, sophomore attacker Elizabeth Keane (Corona HS) of the Mounties added two goals in the third period to trail, 5-3, heading into the final quarter.

However, the Mustangs, who reached the CCCAA State Final Four last season, scored four straight goals in the fourth period to put the game away, 9-3.

Mt. SAC freshmen attackers Hannah Krolik (Ontario HS) and Clare Rowland (St. Lucy's HS) both had two steals each in the game.

Host American River College held the Mounties scoreless in the first half, while scoring four goals.

After scoring again in the third period for the 5-0 lead, the Mounties got on the scoreboard with a goal by 2-meter specialist Marina Valenzuela.

Entering the fourth period trailing 7-1, the Mounties outscored the Beavers, 4-3, on two goals by De Herrera and single goals by Keane (1 assist, 1 steal) and Rowland (1 assist, 4 steals).
