Mt. SAC Wrestling Wins Eight of Ten Matches, Defeats Palomar, 37-9, in Southwest Conference Dual

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Wrestling Team captured eight of ten matches to easily defeat visiting Palomar College, 37-9, and remain undefeated in the Southwest Conference at 3-0.
 
John Whisner (125 lbs.) began the dual with a technical fall, at 5:00 minutes, giving the Mounties a 5-0 lead.
 
At the 133 pound weight class, Julian Melecio easily defeated his opponent by major decision (4 team points) which gave increased Mt. SAC's lead to nine.
 
Palomar, 0-3 in conference, won the first of its two matches in the 141 Lb. weight class with an 8-5 decision (3 team points) over Mt. SAC's Andrew Saucedo, closing Mt. SAC's lead to 9-3
 
The Mounties then reeled off six straight wins.  The first two wins came on consecutive first period Mt. SAC pins (6 team points) by Manuel Salcedo (149 Lbs.) at 2:30 and Joseph Dominguez (157 Lbs.) at 1:07, stretched the Mountie lead to 21-3 after five matches.
 
At the 165 lb. weight class, Mt. SAC's Matthew Mejia provided one of the best matches of the night, with a back and forth match that ended in a slim, 12-11, decision. Each wrestler had two take downs (2 pts. each) and two escapes (1 point each) in the first period as they
were tied, 6-6. At the end of the second period, Mejia took an 8-7 lead after a two-point reversal (2 pts.) and an escape by his opponent.
 
With a one-point lead heading into the final period, Mejia found himself trailing, 11-10 with time winding down in the match.  In the grasp of his opponent, Mejia had a reversal as time expired to take the win and extend Mt. SAC's lead to 24-3.       
 
Hector Vargas (174 Lbs.) won by technical fall (2:57) for the win (5 team points) that gave Mt. SAC a 29-3 lead and the match victory.
 
In the 184 Lb. weight class, Luis Melecio won by decision (6-1, 3 team points) and David Chavarria won by technical fall (7:00, 5 team points).
    
Heavyweight Gabe Herrera, lost by pin at the 6:39 minute mark, for the second win of the night by Palomar, sealing the final score at 37-9.   
 
The Mounties next home match will be against cross town rival Cerritos College on Wednesday, November 8th at 7:00 pm.
