(SANTA ANA) The Mountie wrestling team is off to a good start this season under fourth-year head coach David Rivera.

The team placed second, 19 points out of first behind Palomar College, last Saturday at the Santa Ana Community College Wrestling Tournament.

Previously, the team finished third at the West Hills College Invitational, placing nine wrestlers, including Co-MVP's sophomore Reed South and freshman Freddie Garcia in the 184 weight class.

At the opening event of the season, the Mt. SAC Duals, the Mounties were 3-1.

"We have a total of 21 wrestlers competing this season," fourth-year coach David Rivera said. "They are competing for ten weight classes, which means there are about two or three competing for each class. They all are pretty competitive in practice."
In the Santa Ana 10-team tournament, the Mounties placed six wrestlers, which included lower weight MVP Roy Galvan.

Galvan, a freshman, won the 133 lb. weight class with four wins that included a fall, major decision and two decisions. His major decision was in the championship match against Palomar with a 9-1 win. Galvan placed third in the West Hills Invitational.

Also winning a weight class was sophomore Casper Sherow at 149 lbs., as he defeated fellow teammate, freshman Joseph Dominguez. Sherow was 4-0 in the tournament.

In the 157 lb. weight class, freshman Vincent Herrera finished third for the Mounties.

Other placers for the Mounties were freshman Elijah Diaz finishing fourth in the 125 lb. weight class and sophomore Angel Alcantaralso placing fourth in the 197 lb. weight class.

This Saturday the team travels to compete in the Modesto College Tournament.
