Mt. SAC Women’s Basketball Easily Defeats RCC 87-53 in Second Round of CCCAA State Playoffs

(Walnut, CA) The quest for a record 9th CCCAA State Championship for the Mt. SAC Women's Basketball Team began with an easy, 87-53, Saturday night victory at home, over Riverside City College in the second round of the playoffs.

Leading the Mounties, but coming off the bench, was guard Deja Siaki (7-11 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 5-6 FT, 4 Asst.) who scored a game-high 22 points.

"I feel good for the second round of the playoffs," Siaki said. "It feels good to play a bigger role this year and I learned a lot from the sophomores last year.

"I'm looking for that three-peat."

Mt. SAC coach Brian Crichlow was once again very happy with his bench play.

"That's the area we wanted to improve on and with Deja's ability to score off the bench and the rest of the bench, it gives us some balance."

Mt. SAC looks to become the first team in history to capture three consecutive titles twice. Ventura accomplished the 3-peat from 2000-'02 and the Mounties accomplished the same from 2006-'08.

The Mounties, seeded second in the Southern California Regional, improved to 24-7 overall and will face No. 7 Irvine Valley College (25-4), this Saturday night ,at Mt. SAC.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.

"I think with the time of the year it is, everyone is trying to get victories and keep their season going," Crichlow said. "Everyone left is top seed."

"We were part of the number-one conference in the south and played a tough preseason, which helps us now."

With a win in the So Cal Regional final, the two-time defending CCCAA State Champion Mounties would move on to their 12th consecutive state tournament.

Four of the five Mountie starters scored in double figures; Tianna Burrell (5-8 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 2-4 FT, 9 RB, 5 Assts.) 15 points, Dominique McLaughlin (5-10 FGM, 2-6 3PM, 2-2 FTM, 6 RB, 4 Assts., Steal, 2 Blks.) 14 points, Tiana Douglas (5-7 FGM, 2-3 FTM, 5 RB, 2 Blks.) 12 points and Jonnae Vermillion (4-8 FGM, 2-2 FTM, 8 RB, 3 Assts., 3 Blks.) 10 points.

The Mounties out-rebounded the Tigers 39-19, connected for eight 3-pointers (57.1%), scored 20 points off of RCC turnovers and scored 30 bench points.

In the first quarter the Mounties nearly doubled the scoring output of RCC 25-13, followed by another big quarter in the second, 27-11 for a 52-24 halftime advantage.

They continued to keep the pressure in the second half with a 35-29 advantage.
