Mt. SAC Women Basketball Advance to Third Tournament Championship Game with 60-51 Victory over L.A. Valley

(Walnut, CA) The season is young but the Mt. SAC Women's Basketball Team has advanced to its third consecutive championship game with a 60-51 semifinal win over L.A. Valley in the 41st Annual Gilcrest Tournament at the College of the Sequoias Saturday afternoon.

Leading the way for the Mounties was Jonnae Vermillion (5 of 8 FT, 2 steals) and Tianna Burrell (6 of 6 FT, 5 reb, 3 of 7 3pt.) with 15 points each.

Vermillion also had a team-high 13 rebounds, while guard Dominique McLaughlin (4 of 5 FG, 4 reb, 3 steals) added nine points and guard Myjoi Adams (2 of 2 FG, 3 of 4 FT, 3 reb) had seven.

As a team, the Mounties shot 71.4% (15-21) at the free throw line.

L.A. Valley took a 15-8 first-quarter lead, but the Mounties (8-1) reversed that in the second quarter taking a two-point halftime lead (25-23) with a 17-8 advantage in the quarter.

Burrell was the spark in the second quarter scoring eight of her 15 points in the second quarter, which included a perfect 5 of 5 at the charity stripe.

The Mounties stretched the lead to six points, 45-39 after three quarters and outscore L.A. Valley by three in the final quarter for the 60-51 final.
