Mt. SAC Softball Bats Explode In 15-0 Win Over Compton College

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Softball team sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the first inning against Compton College, en route to a 15-0 win.  The Tuesday afternoon South Coast Conference crossover game was shortened, due to the 8-run mercy rule, after five innings.

In that inning, the Mounties (4-1) banged out six hits, four of which came consecutively from Alissa Perez (1-2, R), Amanda Esquivel (1-1, R, RBI), Adriana Ramirez (1-1, R, 2 RBIs) and Jackie Olvera (1-1, R, 2 RBIs, BB).

Scoring twice in the inning was shortstop Carissa Felix (1-1, 2 R, BB).

The offensive explosion came on the heels of an intense 11-inning, 2-1, victory over Santiago Canyon on Saturday.

"Nothing changes from one game to another, no matter who the opponent is," Mt. SAC Coach Ruby Rojas relied.

"We had a lot of girls contribute (on Tuesday) and they are learning as the season goes on."

Nineteen Mounties batted, coming through with 14 hits.

Mt. SAC scored another three runs in the second inning to lead 12-0, on three singles by Gabby Estrada (2-2, R), Erika Eklund (1-2, R, RBI) and Nikki Soto (2-2, R, RBI).

The only hit for extra bases for the Mounties came off the bat of Ronni Gallegos (1-2, R, RBI), who tripled to right field in the third inning, to give Mt. SAC a 14-0 lead.

Also getting a hit was Caitlyn Felina (1-2), Vicky Gutierrez (1-2, R, 2 RBIs) and Sasha Allen (1-2, R).

In the circle, starter Jessica Olvera allowed only one hit and struck out four, in two innings of action.

This marked the first game in two years that the Olvera twins filled both pitcher and catcher duties in a game. Jessica sat out the 2017 season due to surgery.

"It was great," Jackie Olvera said. "It feels good having Jessica on the mound. Like a one-two punch. I know what kind of pitches she throws."

Ericka Tiscareno (1-0) pitched the final three innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out four Compton batters for the victory.

"We have a young team and they have a lot of motivation."

The Mounties travel to Cerritos for a 3:00 p.m. game, on Thursday, before returning home against El Camino on Tuesday, February 13.
