Mt. SAC Softball Downs Santiago Canyon, 2-1, in 11 Innings

(Walnut, CA) In the second longest game in over eight years, the Mt. SAC Softball team outlasted visiting Santiago Canyon, 2-1, in 11 innings.   in a nonconference game Saturday evening.

With the nonconference Saturday evening win, the Mounties gave Santiago Canyon its first defeat, after starting the season 7-0.  Mt. SAC improved to 3-1.

In the 11th inning, with the bases loaded, first baseman Ciara Granado singled to the right side of the infield, scoring Adriana Ramirez for the winning run in the three-hour game.

Mounties starting pitcher Jessica Olvera allowed only one run (first inning) and gave up five hits in seven innings, before Briana Wheeler finished up the last four innings.

Wheeler struck out five Eagles batters and picked up her third win of the season.

After Santiago Canyon took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first-inning, the Mounties answered with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Candace Haliburton (1-3, R) singled and then advanced to second on an infield error by the Hawks.  Two consecutive errors by the Hawks Catcher (passed ball and throwing error) allowed Haliburton to score.  

It was all zeros from there until the game-ending hit by Granado.

Mountie shortstop Carissa Felix led the Mounties with two base hits.

Pinch hitters Jackie Olvera and Michelle Santiago had the only other two hits for the Mounties.

Mt. SAC will host Compton on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
