Mounties Bang Out 16 Runs, 18 Hits, Defeat Rio Hondo, 16-5; Five Players with Two Hits

By John M. Sherrard

(Whittier, CA) The hit barrage continued for the Mt. SAC Softball team as they won their ninth consecutive game Tuesday afternoon, a 16-5 fifth-inning shortened game in the South Coast Conference North against Rio Hondo College.

The Mounties, ranked third in the state and second in Southern California, improved to 31-3 overall and a perfect 10-0 in conference.

More importantly, however, is the latest So Cal RPI ranking, which is good for second behind No. 1 Cypress College. A first and second round home playoff series would be the reward, with Cypress hosting the other games.

Playoffs are set to begin May 6-7 for the Mounties.

In the win over the Roadrunners, Mt. SAC had two big innings, scoring five runs in the first and six in the fourth.

Five players led Mt. SAC with two hits apiece, led by sophomore center fielder Bree Maikai (2 for 2, 2 runs) and freshman designated player Carissa Felix (2-3, 2 runs) with three RBIs each.

Pitcher Sarah Wapner won her fifth game against only one loss. The freshman allowed five hits and two runs.

The Mounties also pounded out six extra base hits, which included three triples – Aleyah Wilbon (1-3, run), Maikai and Kristen Williams.

Sophomore shortstop Kayla Sok stole a base, which was her 27th of the season.

Highlighting the five-run first inning were two run-scoring doubles by sophomore second baseman Mandy Larios (2-2, 2 runs) and sophomore right fielder Alyssa Rasso (2-3, 2 RBIs, run) respectively. Maikai added a run-scoring triple and twin sisters Erin (1-2, 1 run, 2 RBIs) and Toni Mendoza (2-3, 2 runs) had run-scoring singles.

The six-run fourth was highlighted by two RBIs each by Felix and Sok.
