And the Beat Goes On! Softball Sweeps DH for 17th Consecutive Win; Defeats Fresno, 10-2 and Bakersfield, 12-2

(Bakersfield, CA) A doubleheader sweep by the Mt. SAC Softball team of Fresno City and host Bakersfield College on Saturday afternoon keep its perfect record alive at 17 consecutive games to start the season.

Both games were halted after the eight-run rule was reached as they defeated Fresno City College, 10-2, in the opener and in the second game Bakersfield fell to the offensive juggernaut Mounties, 12-2.p

Combined, the Mounties banged out 26 hits in the two games in 12 innings, which included four home runs, a triple and four doubles.

In the first game, a 10-2 win over Fresno, Mt. SAC scored all of its runs via home runs.

Leading the Mounties was sophomore catcher Taylor Jaurique with a single and two home runs (3 for 4, 2 runs, 5 RBIs) and sophomore third baseman Kristen Williams with a solo round-tripper, which included a perfect 3 for 3 (HR, sgl., dbl.).

After the solo shot by Williams in the third inning, the Mounties exploded for seven runs in the fourth on a grand slam by sophomore second baseman Mandy Larios, followed by a three-run shot from Jaurique for the 8-0 lead. Mandy has never hit a home run and her first one was a grand slam. It was also her birthday!

Jaurique finished the scoring with her second four-bagger of the game with the two-run HR in the sixth.

In the second game, a 12-2 win over Bakersfield, the CCCAA State No. 2-ranked Mounties won, 12-2, in a game that halted after six innings. Five players collected two hits apiece, including a three-RBI game by sophomore shortstop Kristen Williams who was 2 for 3 with a run scored and a double. The Mounties had 13 hits in the game.

Freshman catcher Jackie Hooper was 2 for 4, scored two runs, knocked in two runs and had a triple.

Sophomore pitcher Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings won her seventh game of the season going five innings, allowing three hits, no runs and struck out eight.

After taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Mounties put the game away with two, five-run innings in the fourth and sixth.

After taking the 7-0 lead in the fourth, the sixth was highlighted by two big hits.

Hooper singled in two runs, followed by a two-run double by Williams, scoring Hooper and sophomore left fielder Mariah Zaragoza (1-3, walk) for the 12-0 lead.

Bakersfield scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to ruin the shutout.
