Mounties sweep over Bakersfield, Cuesta; 3-2, 8-0

(Bakersfield, CA) – By John M. Sherrard – The Mt. SAC softball team traveled north to Bakersfield Community College for a nonconference double header and came away with a sweep to improve to 31-4 on the season.

Mt. SAC, which is ranked sixth in the state, and is tied with the College of San Mateo with 31 wins defeated host Bakersfield, 3-2, and shutout Cuesta College, 8-0, in the second game.

The Mounties scored a run in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie for the 3-2 win and in the second game freshman Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings (Chino HS) pitched a one-hitter in the mercy-shortened game over Cuesta College.

In the first game against Bakersfield, with the game tied 2-2 in the seventh inning, sophomore first baseman Aimee Rodriguez (John Burroughs HS) delivered a go-ahead double scoring dp Danielle Jeffress (Kaiser HS) for the 3-2 lead.

Freshman pitcher Racqual Espinoza (Golden Valley HS), who relieved starter Jessica Olvera (John F. Kennedy HS) in the fifth inning, retired the Bakersfield batters in the bottom half of the inning to pick up her ninth win of the season.

Olvera struck out six in her four 2/3 innings of work.

Mt.  SAC had four sacrifices in the game and swiped three bases.

Tiffany-Cummings shuts down Cuesta

The second game was highlighted by a one-hit shutout by Kennedy-Cummings, (12-2), who faced one batter over the minimum and struck out four.

Freshman catcher Taylor Jaurique (Wilson HH HS) led the 13-hit attack with a perfect 3 for 3, including a game-high four RBIs, double and a home run

Freshman DP Aleyah Wilbon (Summit HS) and Rodriguez (2 for 2, run, RBI) each had two hits. Wilbon also stole three bases and as a team Mt. SAC had six.

Highlighting the six-run sixth was a pair of doubles, one by Rodriguez and a two-run double by Jaurique scoring freshman center fielder Bree Maikai (Oak Hill HS) and sophomore third baseman P.J. Leon (Upland HS).
