Twice as Nice for Men Water Polo in Mountie Mini Tourney; Defeat Fullerton, 27-10; SD Mesa, 24-7

By John M. Sherrard

(WALNUT) The Mountie Men's Water Polo team finished the regular season with a scoring frenzy in the Mt. SAC Mini Tournament Friday at the Marie T. Mills Aquatic Center.

With the post season only a week away the Mounties let it all fly in the three-team tourney with a morning victory over Fullerton, 27-10, and an afternoon win against San Diego Mesa, 24-7.

Mt. SAC will now turn its sites on the second season beginning next Friday in the South Coast Conference tournament to be held at Pasadena City College.

The Mounties, seeded third, will play No. 6 seed El Camino College at 9:00 a.m.

The tournament continues later in the afternoon with the semifinals and the championship game is on Saturday.

If the Mounties get by El Camino, a giant rematch will be on the horizon against Cerritos (first-round bye) in the conference semifinals. Cerritos defeated the Mounties in their only game against each other last month.

Last year Mt. SAC lost in the conference championship game to Long Beach City College, which went on to win the CCCAA state championship.

Seven sophomores played their last home game, including top goal-scorer Scott McDill, who scored 14 goals in the two games. Jeffrey Silverberg had nine.

McDill finished the regular season as the No. 3 scorer in the state, just five goals behind the leader.

In addition, six Mounties also finished in the top ten in six categories.

Silverberg was third in assists (59) in the state and Thomas Randles (56) was fourth. Randles (97) and Silverberg (82), who were terrific on defense for the Mountie this season, ended the season at No. 1 and No. 3 in the state.

In goal for the Mounties was first-year goalie Andres Jaramillo. The sophomore was tops in the state with 19 wins and fifth in saves.

"I've never played goalie before and it's been two months already," explained Jaramillo. "It's been a great experience."

The Mounties came out flying in the first game against Fullerton College with 14 first-half goals for the 14-4 lead.

McDill and Silverberg, who have been playing together since their years at Walnut high, scored three each in the opening period.

The Mounties finished with 27 goals in the game, which was the second time they had reached that total this season.

On the year the Mounties were the second highest team in the state with 419 goals. Only Cerritos College had more goals with 431.

Mt. SAC totaled 29 steals in the game, giving them a total of 596 for the season, which is tops in the state and over 170 more than Palomar College.

The second game was more of the same with the 24-7 final over SD Mesa.

Leading the way again was McDill with six goals, followed by four from sophomore 2-meter player Hans Masten. Scoring three goals each was Randles, and a pair of freshmen attackers, Nick Perez and Cristian Lopez.

With an 11-4 lead at the half, the Mounties continued the assault in the second half with 13 goals.

Not to be lost was the defensive effort as Randles and Silverberg led the way with six and five steals respectively.

"For some reason (Friday) I was able to get open more often and I was able to finish better," said Masten, who along with Randles, was on the CIF champion Claremont team in 2014.

"It's taken last season and this season to really start to understand the (college) game and the dynamics of it. There is a giant difference between high school and college."
