Mt. SAC’s Kyle Beck Wins Decathlon Pole Vault Event in UC Riverside Spring Break Classic

(Riverside, CA) Two Mountie vaulters got their feet wet in a new event for them, The Decathlon. Both Kyle Beck and Zach Auguenstien took to the track in the ten-discipline event Friday and Saturday at UC Riverside.

Mt. SAC sophomore Kyle Beck bested 16 college and university athletes in the pole vault event of the grueling Decathlon at the UC Riverside Classic Invitational on Friday.

His leap of 16' 0 ¾" was on his fourth attempt and was over 15" better than the second-place finisher (14' 9") was from Azusa Pacific University on the second day of competition.

With his vault, he earned 880 points for a 5550 total in the 10-events for a 15th place finish. With his score he has enough points to advance to the Southern California Championships in the Decathlon and currently has the second best mark in State.

The second Mounties entrant in the Decathlon was freshman Zack Auguenstien, who vaulted 13' 1 ½" for a tenth-place in the event.

Auguenstien was 19th in the two-day competition earning 3841 points.

Beck and Auguenstien were the only community college competitors at the annual Spring Classic in the Decathlon.

After the first day of competition with four events completed, Beck and Auguenstien were in 18th (2791 Pts.) and 22nd (2146 Pts.) place respectively.

They both improved their position after the final five events on Friday.

Beck, who won the CCCAA Southern California Regional pole vault title last season, also had a top-ten finish in the 1500 Run.

His seventh-place finish was ran in a time of 4:59.50, 30 seconds behind the winner.

Completed on Thursday were two of the four running events, with Beck running an 11.72 for 15th in the 100 Meter Dash and 55.04 in the 400 M Dash for his best finishes of the day.

Beck had a leap of 5.57 Meters (18' 3 ¼") in the Long Jump, 9.62 Meters (31' 6 ¾") in the Shot Put and 1.68 Meters (5' 6") in the High Jump on the first day.

Auguenstien's highest finish on Thursday was an 18th in the Shot Put with a toss of 9.58 Meters (31' 5 1/4").

Auguenstien's other times and distances in four events were; 100 M, 12.72, 400 M, 1:01.54, Long Jump, 5.41 M (17' 9") and the High Jump, 1.44 M (4' 8 ¾").

In the two remaining running events on Friday, Auguenstien ran times of 23.25 in the 110 Hurdles and 6:00.27 in the 1500, while Beck ran a 17.73 in the 110 Hurdles.

The marks in the remaining field events for both athletes were as follows:

Beck – Discus (19th), 23.12 M (75' 10"); Javelin (13th), 39.52 M (129' 8").

Auguenstien – Discus (21st), 20.83 M (68' 4"); Javelin (19th), 36.35 M (119' 3").

Both athletes will travel with the team on Thursday March 29 and Friday March 30 to the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Stanford University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
