(Long Beach, CAThe Mt. SAC Track and Field Program had a stellar first day at the South Coast Conference (SCC) Championships which are being held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach (CA) on Tuesday (April 26th) and Friday (April 29th).  After four events, the Mountie Men have scored 105 points, 75 more than the second place Cerritos College (30 points) and the Mountie Women are in second place with 44.5 points, 29 points behind leader Cerritos College.

Four “final” events were held on Tuesday, including the 10,000M run, Javelin, Pole Vault and Triple Jump.  In the Men’s 10,000M, Triple Jump and Pole Vault, the Mounties nearly swept those events scoring 101 points between them (out of a possible 156 points).  Individual SCC Championships were won by Kevin Herrera in the 10,000M (32:15.10), Anthony Applequist in the Triple Jump (48’11”3/4), Giovanni Hernandez in the Pole Vault (15’09”3/4) and Crystal Jardines in the Women’s 10,000M (41:17.27).

In the qualifying heats/rounds, the Mounties qualified a very deep field, especially in the sprints.  Mt. SAC claimed the first seven positions in the men’s 200M and did not run state leader, Cravon Gillespie, who has automatically qualified to the SoCal Championships, with his state leading time of 20.58.
