Mt. SAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Team Wins South Coast Conference for Ninth Consecutive Year; Defeat LBCC, 152-126; Winning Streak Reaches 53

By John M. Sherrard

(Monterey Park, CA) Nine consecutive titles and counting for the Mt. SAC Men's Swimming and Diving team in the South Coast Conference.

Included in those nine championship years is a phenomenal 53 dual-meet winning streak dating back to 2010 and seven consecutive undefeated SCC crowns.

The latest of those 53 victories was a 152-126 win over Long Beach City College at East Los Angeles College.

Freshman distance swimmer Spencer Chlebowski (1000 Free and 500 Free) and sophomore Bryan Calderon (100 and 200 Backstroke) each won two events and the diving team (1-2-3 finish) was led by sophomore Esteban Martinez.

"We are always excited to be able to win the very tough SCC dual meet championship," Mt. SAC Swimming and Diving, Head Coach Marc Ruh said.

With the win over LBCC, the Mounties finished the regular season dual meets with a 7-0 record, while the Vikings were second at 6-1. Pasadena City College (5-2) placed third.

In the meet, the Vikings won eight events and Mt. SAC seven.

"In the big scheme of things, it is the conference championship meet (April 20-22 at Mt. SAC) that is where all of the marbles are," Ruh added.  "We really need to win that one to be considered true conference champions.  It should be a great meet and we expect a very close meet.

"I'm sure there are at least three teams that could end up on top.  It should be a battle."

As for the winning streak, it was in doubt down to the last two races of the meet, as the Mounties held a slim eight-point lead, 125-117.

In the final two races, the 200 Individual Medley and 400 Freestyle Relay, a total of 36 points were up for grabs.

Sophomore Kyle Chang, who also finished second in two other individual events, won the 200 IM (2:02.80), followed by Calderon's second. Mt. SAC built up a 139-122 lead heading into the final relay.

The Mounties, with the relay team of Ashcon Dejbakhsh (SO), Spencer Chlebowski (FR), Zach Justus (FR) and Renen Devito (SO), won the event and the meet with a time of 3:23.28, almost six seconds better than the Vikings.

"This was a great dual meet," Ruh said. "Long Beach is well-coached and always comes ready to compete. We are very proud of the team, as they overcame some early obstacles in the meet and bounced back as a team to do what they had to do to win."

The Mounties were without the services of freshman Alex Neoh (200 butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke), as he is a US Marine Reservist and was away at a required training weekend.
