Top-Ranked Men’s Soccer Ends Regular Season on Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak, Awaits Play-Off Seeding

(Walnut, CA) With an unbeaten streak in the last seven games, the Mounties defeated visiting East Los Angeles College (ELAC), 6-1, last Friday afternoon at the Mountie Soccer Complex.

Mt. SAC, ranked No. 1 in the state and the 2016 South Coast Conference Champions, will begin its quest for a fifth CCCAA title in the So Cal Regionals which begin on Thursday (11/17). Seedings and game times will be announced on Tuesday (11/15) however the Mounties will most likely receive a first round play-off bye.  

Leading the way for the Mounties was sophomore midfielder Axel Mendez with three goals.  Sophomore forward Julio Velasquez provided two and freshman forward Sam Ponting provided one goal.  Mendez also assisted on both of Velasquez' goals.  

Mendez gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute, followed by goals by Ponting (15th minute) and Mendez again for the 3-0 halftime lead.

Velasquez scored twice in the second half, just three minutes apart in the 55th and 58th minute, to put the Mounties ahead 5-0.

ELAC broke the shutout in the 65th minute, to trail, 5-1, before Mendez score again in the 79th minute.

Goalie Edwyn Gutierrez notched his 15th win of the season. The freshman is fourth in the state with a .862 save percentage and fifth with a 0.67 goals against average.
