(Walnut) For the second time in a week the Mt. SAC Men's Basketball team went into overtime, only this time they pulled out a victory over visiting Fullerton College Monday night, 74-70.

With the win the Mounties improved to 10-6 overall and have just one game remaining before South Coast Conference action begins on January 18 against East Los Angeles College.

"After a tough, hard-fought battle against Fullerton our schedule doesn't get any easier as we will gear up to battle the No. 3-ranked team (San Bernardino Valley College) in the state on the road," Mt. SAC coach Clark Maloney said.

With the score tied, 62-62, at the end of regulation the Mounties outscored the Hornets, 12-8, in the extra period for the win.

Highlighting the game was sophomore guard Nick Brown with a season-high 24 points. Brown also poured in a season-high six 3-pointers. It was both a personal high and tied with sophomore guard Charlie Evans IV with six in a game. Evans was 9 of 19 from the field, had five boards and three steals.

Also in double figures with a solid contribution coming off of the bench was freshmen Corey Grant (4-7 FG, 5-8 FT, 8 RB, 5 assists) with 12 points and Josh Johnson (3-6 FG, 4-6 FT) added 10 points.

The Mounties trailed by only four at the half, 35-31, however Fullerton went on an 8-0 run to start the second half to take a 43-31 lead, trying to put the game away early.

Mt. SAC took its first lead of the game at the 5:01 mark of the second half, 56-54, and trailed 61-60 with 1:05 remaining.

"We battled back with runs of our own to eventually force overtime," said Maloney of the comeback. "In overtime we were able to pull away, despite clutch shots by them."

As a team the Mounties brought down 31 rebounds and had 12 steals.

Freshman forward Nikita Ussenov had six rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot, while sophomores Damarcus Carter (3-3 FG, 4 RB) added seven points and Ashton McLaurin (3-8 FG, 3 RB) had six points.

The Mounties will now travel to play San Bernardino Valley College on Friday January 6, 2017 in a non-conference game.
