(Walnut, CA) The late-season winning continues for the Mt. SAC Baseball team, with the latest victory coming over Chaffey College, 5-0, with a complete-game by sophomore Josh Avila in a South Coast Conference North game Thursday.

The nine-inning, five-hitter was the first complete-game for Avila who improved to 8-4 on the season. Avila (3 Ks) has won his last five games, which also includes a save. He also faced only 30 batters in the game.

"It has been amazing to watch Josh in command of all of his pitches the past month," Mt. SAC Baseball coach John Knott said. "He has been aggressive in the strike zone and has been able to make quality pitches in difficult situations.

"The defense has done a great job of playing well behind him and Josh has been able to keep them active by pounding the zone. It is a testament to his character and hard work that as the season has gotten longer and more challenging that he has gotten better."

With the win Mt. SAC improves to 16-19 overall and 8-10 in conference.

Freshman first baseman Jacob Castillo led the Mounties with a 2 for 4 day, a run scored, three RBIs and a double.

The game started out as a pitchers' duel for the first five innings, until the Mounties broke through with two runs in the sixth inning.

Castillo singled in freshman shortstop Ryon Knowles (2-4, run) and freshman center fielder Quinn Cotter for the, 2-0 lead.

The Mounties added three more runs in the eighth inning on an RBI double by Castillo, scoring freshman left fielder Nic Sandoval and a two-run triple by sophomore catcher Andrew Garcia, scoring freshman designated hitter Conner Shepherd (2-3, run) and Castillo.

Mt. SAC concludes its three-game series with Chaffey College on Saturday at noon.
