Mounties lose lead, then game, 7-5, to College of the Canyons

(Walnut) By John M. Sherrard – After Mt. SAC took a three-run lead into the seventh inning, College of the Canyons sent eleven batters to the plate, scoring five runs that eventually led to a 7-5 victory in a nonconference game Friday afternoon at Mazmanian Field.

Trailing, 2-0, in the fourth, the Mounties scored four runs on four hits, including a sacrifice fly to take a 4-2 lead. They scored a single run in the sixth for a 5-2 lead.

Leading the way for Mt. SAC (2-2) was sophomore third baseman Esteban Ortega (Los Altos HS) with a two-run double, single, a hit batter and two runs scored in four at bats.

Canyons (2-0) pitcher Chase Wheatcroft throttled the Mounties for the first three innings, pitching a perfect game until the fourth inning.

After an out, freshman right fielder Antonio Muniz (South Hills HS) reached on a walk and the flood gates opened as Muniz and the next three batters all scored.

Sophomore catcher Kory Brown (Charter Oak HS) blooped a single to right, followed by a walk to sophomore designated hitter Spencer Sundahl (East Lake HS, Chula Vista) to load the bases.

Ortega then hit a double to right field, scoring Brown and Sundahl. Sundahl came in on a sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Logan Muratalla (San Dimas HS) and Ortega came home on a single by shortstop Michael Smith (Tulsa Memorial HS, Tulsa, OK).

Ortega also scored in the sixth for the 5-2 lead.
