Women's Volleyball: Rio Hondo drops four-set match to No. 17 Mt. SAC

Rio Hondo College returned to its home court after consecutive away matches and had its modest two-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18) South Coast Conference North Division loss to the visiting No. 17 state-ranked Mt. San Antonio College Mounties on Wednesday night.

After dropping the opener, Rio Hondo evened the match up with a second-set victory. In the third, the Roadrunners came close to pulling off the win, but were edged 25-23 in a hard-fought battle. The Mounties (12-1, 3-0 SCC) continued their momentum and closed out the victory by taking the fourth.

Sophomore Paula Alferez once again led the Roadrunners' attack with 12 kills on her way to a .385 hitting percentage. She also added seven digs and an ace.

Bree Newton, Michelle Hawkins, Michelle Rosas, and Erika Mendoza all contributed five kills each while Carleigh Cruz led Rio Hondo with 11 digs. Haley Brownwood had a team-high 13 assists and Newton totaled five blocks (3 solo) to lead the Roadrunners at the net. Jacqueline Chaidez also had a productive night with 10 digs, four kills, and two aces.

Wednesday's loss dropped Rio Hondo to 7-6 overall and 2-2 SCC North Division play. The Roadrunners look to get back on track with a SCC interdivision match next Wednesday (Oct. 12) at LA Harbor College in Wilmington.
